Book Description

This anthology of original poems for young children by Alma Flor and Isabel includes some of their favorites.

Award winning illustrator Claudia Legnazzi complements this book with her vibrant and delightful creations.

Author’s Note

Poetry is a child’s best friend. A poem is a treasure that can remain with us forever. New words, new structures, new images, ideas, values and reflections can be part of the poem’s gift. Rhyme, rhythm or cadence will facilitate remembering it.

A poem a day is an infallible prescription for an engaging classroom and happy children.

Facilitating access of children to poetry has been one of my life quests.

Many years ago, in what now seems as another life time, when my children were growing up in Perú I was able to publish in Lima four poetry anthologies Poesía Menuda, Poesía Pequeña, Poesía Infantil, Poesía Niña.

Later I was able to incorporate wonderful poetry in the Hagamos caminos reading program.

Publishing Días y días de poesía, an anthology with a poem for each day of the year, has been one of my greatest satisfactions in life. I know many classrooms have incorporated the idea of “a poem a day” thanks to that anthology. Collaborating with Lee Bennet Hopkins and Violet Harris to create the English companion to Días y días de poesía, the multicultural anthology A Chorus of Cultures was an equally joyful experience.

Isabel Campoy and I have published a series of seven anthologies of poetry in Spanish as part of the Cielo abierto Series: Gorrión gorrión, La rama azul, Verde limón, Dulce es la sal, Nuevo día, Huertos de Coral and Ríos de lava. We are delighted to have included there poetry from the best poets from the Spanish-speaking world. As well as the poetry series of Gateways to the Sun / Puertas al sol which includes four volumes, in separate editions in English and in Spanish: Dreaming Fish / Pimpón, Laughing Crocodlies / Mambrú, Singing Horse / Mambrú, Flying Dragon / Chuchurumbé. The beautiful presentation of these books, where the artistic illustrations are a worthy companion to the poems gives both Isabel and myself immense satisfaction.

Recently we have published a series of books of rhymes from the oral tradition in bilingual editions, in order that English speakers can also get to know and enjoy our folklore: ¡Pío Peep! and MuuMoo are collections of rhymes. Merry Navidad is a collection of villancicos or Christmas carols, and Ten Little Puppies / Diez perritos a book inspired on a traditional popular rhyme.

Salta, saltarín is a new addition to this world of poetry all children should have access to.

Other works by the same illustrator

Claudia Legnazzi has been the illustrator of two other of my recent books published by Frog Street. The new edition of The rooster who went to his uncle’s wedding / El gallo que fue a la boda de su tío and Cristina y la rana / Cristina and the Frog.

Claudia was also one of the illustrators of the collection Gateways to the Sun / Puertas al sol. Among her work there she did outstanding illustrations for my play Serafina’s Birthday / El cumpleaños de Serafina included in the book Roll ’N’ Role / Teatrín de Don Crispín.

Book Description

In this whimsical ABC book in Spanish each letter is represented by an animal which in turn introduces the next.

This book represents the playful rhymes that young children thoroughly enjoy. It will be a delightful way of making young children aware of initial letter/sound correlation, of individual letters, of the ABC, and of the names of many animals.

The excellent illustration by María de Jesús Álvarez, and the clever rhymes, makes this a book to be enjoyed by all.

Author’s Note

Animals were a very important part of my life and of my children’s lives. This is why it is not surprising that so many of my books are populated by animals.

I enjoy clever rhymes and delight when I see how much children appreciate them.

This playful book will invite them to anticipate which can be the next animal and a word that rhymes with the animal’s name is always the clue.

It always give me great satisfaction when I can have a book published that gives children joy while allowing them to enrich their vocabulary, acquire new concepts, and become stronger readers.

I hope this playful book will do just that.

And what a joy that it would have such beautiful illustrations by María Jesús Álvarez, who had already illustrated Celebra un PowWow con Sandy Starbright / Celebrate a Pow Wow with Sandy Starbright, one of the books from the Cuentos para celebrar / Stories to Celebrate series.

Correlations

This book can correlate to my other ABC books: Abecedario de los animales, Coral y espuma: Abecedario del mar, and Gathering the Sun.

Other books with rhymes are: Me gustaría tener / How Happy I Would Be and Una extraña visita / Strange Visitors.

A book that also offers prediction supported by the rhyme is ¿Quién nacerá aquí? / Who’s Hatching Here?

Book Description

This book includes the biographies of three very different individuals, each a remarkable contributor to her/her society.

Playwright, screenwriter, and director Luis Valdez began his life as a farm worker but he held onto his dreams. Holding onto our dreams is one of the keys to success. Hop aboard as we accompany muralist Judith Francisca Baca, and the person who discovered the cause of yellow fever, and Doctor Carlos Juan Finlay, from their humble beginnings to their incredible accomplishments.

Author’s Note

José Martí, extraordinary writer and exceptional human being, liked to say “Honrar, honra” implying that when we honor those who deserve it, we somehow partake of the honor. His message that it is important to honor those who have open roads that we now travel has inspired this biography series.

Isabel and I would like children to realize that the people we admire earned that admiration as they faced life with courage and dignity, determined not to be stopped by difficulties, but consistently following their dreams.

It is our great hope that children will recognize that humble beginnings or physical limitations, while creating unquestionable challenges, should not be seen as impossible barriers, and that these biographies will be for them an inspiration.

Connections

There are ample references to the Migrant Farm Workers in my books, since working with Migrant Farm Working families has been one of the most significant aspects of my life.

Specifically connected to Luis Valdés work “Teatro campesino: ¡Qué florezca la luz!” en Imágenes del pasado is a reflection about the Teatro canpesino and the Migrant Farm Workers experience.

Gathering the Sun is an alphabet book of poems, written in honor of the Farm Workers. The book was illustrated by Simon Silva, who grew up on a farm workers family. The poems have been turned into powerful songs by Suni Paz, who recorded them for the CD of the same title.

The life of César Chávez is tied to the Migrant Farm Workers struggle. Thus an interesting connection could be established between the biography of Luis Valdés and that of Chávez which appears in Paths or Caminos, another book of this series.

Gathering the Sun/ Puertas al sol Collection Description

This collection highlights the genius, the tenacity and the achievement of Hispanic culture. For Hispanic readers, the collection promotes pride in their culture; for non-Hispanic readers, it fosters an appreciation and an acknowledgment of—and a respect for—Latinos. The collection comprises the following 6 series. Each book and journal is published in separate editions in English and in Spanish.

Poetry Series Gateways to the Sun

These poetry anthologies are divided in sections featuring poets from various countries from the Spanish speaking world. The sections open with original poems by Alma Flor Ada and F. Isabel Campoy celebrating the poets and the poet’s country of origin. Selected poems by the featured poet completes each section. The contribution of Latinos is acknowledged as well as that of the anonymous poets who created the rhymes of the traditional folklore, enriching our heritage.

Book Description

Children recognize that they can change the world through innovation and fairness. In this light they will appreciate the art of Pablo Picasso, who transformed the way in art was conceived and experienced. They will understand the role of Gabriela Mistral’s poetry and her determination to bring education to all children of the Spanish-speaking Americas and they will see justice in the fortitude and determination of Beanito Juárez.

Connections

The three individuals whose biographies form this book have been very influential in my own development as well as Isabel’s, and thus, it is not surprising that they will reappear in many of our books.

Pablo Picasso – The art of Picasso can be found in Brush and Paint or Brocha y pincel, one of the art books of Gateways to the Sun or Puertas al sol.

Gabriela Mistral – Poems by Gabriela Mistral can be found in the anthologies Dulce es la sal, Nuevo día and Ríos de lava from Cielo abierto.

Additional poems can be found in the anthology Días y días de poesía organized in a calendar format with a poem for each day of the year.

Benito Juárez – The actions of Benito Juárez are celebrated in the book Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a Mexican Hat Dance or Celebra el Cinco de Mayo con un jarabe tapatío.

This book includes the biographies of three very different individuals, each a remarkable contributor to her/her society.

Movie artist and singer Rita Moreno had very humble beginnings as a Puerto Rican child growing up in New York. She has worked very hard to achieve excellence in her art, and has received multiple honors including the best possible in her career the Oscar, Tony and Emmy awards.

Fernando Botero is an innovative painter and sculpture. His art is characterized by human figures of very large proportions which make his style very distinguishable.

Evelyn Cisneros achieved the success of becoming the first ballerina of the famous San Francisco Ballet as a result of a combination of her natural talent and grace and a life of study and practice.

Author’s Note

José Martí, extraordinary writer and exceptional human being, liked to say “Honrar, honra” implying that when we honor those who deserve it, we somehow partake of the honor. His message that it is important to honor those who have open roads that we now travel has inspired this biography series.

People who are dedicated to improving the lives of others possess special qualities: José Martí, Frida Kahlo, and César Chávez are three such people. This book explores their lives and shows the ways in which each of them contributed to change the world.

Connections

The three figures whose biographies form this book have been very influential in my own life, and for that reason they appear in multiples places in my work.

José Martí – Readers of Martí biography will also enjoy reading his poetry. Some examples can be found in English and Spanish in the books Chuchurumbé or Flying Dragon. The inspiring poem, Los dos príncipes, appears in Rios de lava and La niña de Guatemala in Huertos de coral. Tiene el leopardo un abrigo in La rama azul. The story in verse Los zapaticos de rosa is included in El son del sol, number 10 in the Collection Música amiga and in the accompanying CD of the same title, with music and voice by Suni Paz.

La rosa blanca, one of the best known poems by Martí is in El camino de tu risa, number 9 in the Collection Música amiga and in the accompanying CD of the same title, sang by Suni Paz.

Additional poems can be found in the anthology Días y días de poesía organized in a calendar format with a poem for each day of the year.

Fryda Kahlo — One of Fryda’s self-portraits can be enjoyed in Brush and Paint or Brocha y pincel, another in the interactive journal Pencils or Pinceles. In Canvas and Paper or Lienzo y papel there is a painting by Frida’s husband, Diego Rivera. In Blue and Green or Azul y verde there are two more of Rivera’s paintings which can also be appreciated in the interactive journal Colors or Colores.

César Chávez – The life of César Chávez is tied to the Migrant Farm Workers struggle. Thus an interesting connection would be the biography of Luis Valdés which appears in Voices or Voces, another book of this series.

In Gathering the Sun, an alphabet book of poems, written in honor of the Farm Workers, there is a poem to César Chávez. It can also be listened to, turned into a powerful song by Suni Paz, in the CD of the same title.

A simple poem to César Chávez appears in Días y días de poesía:

César Chávez
Alma Flor Ada

César, amigo del campesino,
César, que dignificas nuestra labor.
César, abriendo siempre nuevo camino,
César, para el honrado trabajador.

“Teatro campesino: ¡Qué florezca la luz!” en Imágenes del pasado is a reflection about the Teatro canpesino and the Migrant Farm Workers experience.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

On every new spread of this engaging book, the reader is invited to guess, based on the poems and illustrations, what animal will hatch from a different set of eggs. Chicken and mosquitoes, turtles and hummingbirds, butterflies and crocodiles, will give children an experience of the rich diversity of our planet and of the varied creatures that start their lives as eggs. Children will delight in predicting, as well as in the freshness of the rhymes and the exciting watercolors. In the process, they also learn about the different ways in which various animals lay their eggs and the process that occurs before their off springs continue the life chain.

Many teachers have not being able to resist framing the outstanding illustrations by Viví Escrivá, particularly by taking the pages of the Big Books.

CD AND CASSETTE DESCRIPTION

There is a special value to listening to a book read by the author. Such recordings show just where the author wishes to convey feelings and emotions, emphasis and suspense. When the text is put to music it acquires additional interest for children.

The recording for this predictable book invites children to guess, through the clues in the rhyming text, who will be the next animal hatching from a certain group of eggs. In her performance of the music Suni created for this book she incorporates special sound effects to contribute to the predictable clues.

These extraordinary recordings have been produced in individual cassettes in English and Spanish. There are also CDs with English and Spanish versions. Each of the CDs contains the five books of the series.

AUTHOR’S NOTE

My son Miguel had great fascination for birds. He loved watching and studying them. We even got to raise two wild birds, fallen from their nests, first a bluejay, later a robin. Many years later, as an adult, my daughter Rosalma was able to raise a bird who felt from its nest and landed in front of her doorstep. Raising baby birds is not an easy task, and many times proves unsuccessful, but what a joy when they manage to survive.

While we lived in Lima, Perú, my children delighted in observing the butterflies laying their eggs on the ñorbo vine outside of my studio window, as I have describes in speaking about A Rose With Wings or Rosa alada. All of these experiences, as well as the many hours I spent in my childhood watching the turtles and frogs in the river, observing the mosquitoes larvae on the surface of the tinajones, the large clay jars that collect rain water, and keeping tadpoles in a fish tank until they developed into frogs, all led to the creation of this book.

REVIEWS

School Library Journal

About Stories for the Telling: A charming series, illustrated with watercolor and pen-and-ink drawings. The stories are told in a humorous style and are enhanced throughout by Ada’s gift for language and poetry. El Canto del mosquito / The Song of the Teeny Tiny Mosquito is the droll story of a frog who eats a mosquito and whose song then sounds like that of a mosquito. The frog is eaten by a fish, who then sings like a mosquito, etc. Una extraña vista / Strange Visitors is a humorous counting story of the days of the week in rhyme. Me gustaría tener… / How Happy I Would Be… lists the various things “I would like to have…” Again in a counting-book format, the desired items all turn out to be animals involved in unusual activities (e.g. two giraffes reading with glasses). ¿Quién nacerá aquí? / Who’s hatching Here?, in contrast to the others, is a science book. Rhyming riddles ask which animal will hatch from different eggs. The eggs are presented in their natural habitats; both illustrations and text hint at the answers.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

In this companion volume to Alma Flor Ada’s Where the Flame Trees Bloom, the author offers young readers another inspiring collection of stories and reminiscences drawn from her childhood on the island of Cuba. Through those stories we see how the many events and relationships she enjoyed helped shape who she is today.

We learn of a deep friendship with a beloved dance teacher that helped sustain young Alma Flor through a miserable year in school. We meet relatives, like her mysterious Uncle Manolo, whose secret, she later learns, is that he dedicated his life to healing lepers. We share the tragedy of another uncle whose spirited personality leads to his love of flying…and the crash that takes his life.

Heartwarming, poignant, and often humorous, this collection encourages children to discover the stories in their our own lives–stories that can help form their own values and celebrate the joys and struggles we all share no matter where or when we grew up.

The Pura Belpré Award honors Latino writers and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in a children’s book. Alma Flor Ada was named the winner of the Belpré Author Award for Under the Royal Palms: A Childhood in Cuba, published by Atheneum Books.

In a heartwarming and loving portrayal of her childhood days in Cuba, Ada describes her deep friendship with a beloved dance teacher in Under the Royal Palms. Readers meet relatives and share the tragedy of the loss of Ada’s beloved uncle. Photographs enhance the diary-like portrayal of Ada’s early years.

“Where the Flame Trees Bloom encourages children to discover the stories in their own lives and to celebrate the joys and struggles we all share no matter where or when we grew up,” said Yolanda Bonitch, chair of the Pura Belpré Award Selection Committee.

Born in Camagüey, Cuba, Ada is professor of multicultural education at the University of San Francisco. She is a renowned author, translator, scholar, educator, storyteller and advocate for bilingual and multicultural education. Ada received a bachelor’s degree from Universidad Central de Madrid in Spain and a master’s degree and doctorate from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru.

The award was announced January 17, 2000 during the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio. The award is administered by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA, and REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library Services to the Spanish Speaking.

AUTHOR’S NOTE

I am frequently asked, by children and adults alike, which, among the many books I have written is my favorite. I try to explain that I cherish each of my books, because I have written each one with love and they all have taught me something about myself. But I must confess that my books of memoirs, Where the Flame Trees Bloom or Allá donde florecen los framboyanes and Under the Royal Palms, as well as those published only in Spanish, Barquitos de papel, Barriletes, Días de circo, Pin pin sarabín, and Pregones have a special significance because with them I have not only tried to capture the days of my childhood but I have honored the multiple people who made my childhood memorable. These books, like the memoirs I have written for adult readers, Vivir en dos idiomas. have been my way of thanking those who enriched my spirit and taught me so much about trying to honor each day the gift of life.

REVIEWS

Publishers Weekly

In this handsomely designed companion volume to Where the Flame Trees Bloom, Ada once again draws upon her experiences growing up in post-war Cuba. In a short introduction, the author describes her hometown, Camagüey, as a “city of contrasts”? with diverse religions and education and economic levels (“some had so much and others had very little”). The 10 stories that follow do not focus on these oppositions so much as the unique experiences of young Alma and her extended family. Several memories poignantly expose the disparity between those who have and those who have not, such as “Explorers,” in which young Alma and her cousin get lost in a marabú field and are aided and fed by a poverty-stricken family. Others illustrate life lessons (for example, the impossible but gleeful task of counting bats in flight for their nightly feeding taught Alma to appreciate the process of an endeavor, rather than its completion). But the best of these stories simply recreate a poignant or humorous moment from the author’s girlhood: Alma sipping from a porrón (a small clay pot) at school, lovingly filled with water by her mother; Alma’s pride in her uncle’s daring turning to grief when he dies in an airplane crash. Many of the stories stand well alone, but some take a meandering expository path to recount a history or explain a term. These more formal (though often graceful) tangents distance readers from the slices of life. Still, at the core of the collection, there is a heartfelt portrayal of a quickly disappearing culture and a vastly beautiful land. Ages 8–12.

School Library Journal

Grade 4–7: This simple and graceful reminiscence of a childhood in Cuba in the 1940s is a companion to Where the Flame Trees Bloom (Atheneum, 1994). Although not wealthy, the author’s family lived comfortably with aunts, uncles, and cousins in a large, shared family home in the small town of Camagüey. Here any event beyond the ordinary became the focus of everyone’s attention and the fuel for many days of conversation. Each chapter includes an early memory or experience of Ada’s: nursing the baby bats that fell onto her porch, the production of simple and inexpensive plaster figures for nativity scenes, etc. The author writes about the contrast of wealth and poverty in her country at that time and of the people who made an impression on her, including a ballet teacher who befriended her during a lonely year in a new school, and an uncle and aunt who worked with lepers. Her observations of people lead to a series of revelations that shaped her life. Black-and-white photographs of the author and her family appear throughout. –Sylvia V. Meisner, Allen Middle School, Greensboro, NC.

The New York Times Book Review

The success of ”Under the Royal Palms: A Childhood in Cuba,” the companion volume to Alma Flor Ada’s ”Where the Flame Trees Bloom,” derives in no small part from its appeal to adults as well as children. The author, a professor of multicultural education at the University of San Francisco who has written a number of children’s books, understands that to get to a child’s bedroom shelves, often a book must first enchant choosy adults to buy it. And enchant this one does. The slim, handsome book is divided into 10 chapters, each a self-contained story about Ada’s childhood half a century ago in Camaguey, a city in the province of the same name in the center of Cuba, known as the cradle of great poets and courageous freedom fighters. The stories and the endearing black-and-white photographs of her family are woven into a greater theme: everything Ada learned about life, she explains, she learned in her small town, surrounded by family and nature. Although this feels preachy at times, most parents would surely not mind the lessons. For instance, after telling how she spent childhood evenings trying to count bats with her loving grandmother, she draws an eminently sensible conclusion that could easily be applied to many an apparently vain effort: ”On the many occasions when I have later felt that I am once more trying to count bats, engaged in an impossible task, I have allowed myself to laugh, happy to remember that some of the best things in life are like counting bats: it was never the final count that mattered, but rather the joy of seeing them fly.” –Mirta Ojito.

Kirkus Reviews

Of books comprising nuggets of memory there seems to be no end, and in a companion volume to her Where the Flame Trees Bloom (1994, not reviewed), Ada recounts small stories of growing up in the town of in Camagüey, Cuba. She captures with some feeling the powerful effect of scent on memory: night jasmine, coffee, ylang-ylang, and her grandmother’s perfume of lavender and sage. She immortalizes sibling hurts and uncles’ gifts, and writes of the childhood mystery of adult conversations partially overheard and partially understood. She is rich in family, attempting with her grandmother the impossible task of counting bats as they fly, and smashing her favorite doll when her dashing uncle dies in a plane crash. She is rich in memories of other adults, too: Madame Marie, a French-Jewish refugee; Gilda, a dance teacher, whose affection carried Ada through an impossible year at school. Some repetition does not detract, and children might be moved by Ada’s exhortation to consider their own family stories. (b&w photographs) (Memoir. 9–14).

CLASP

Alma Flor Ada offers stories about Cuba that would not otherwise be available to those of us living in the United States. This collection provides the reader with a close look at an active and loving extended family. It chronicles events that would probably stand out for lots of children growing up throughout history and across geographical boundaries: living in different houses, in the city and in the country… and the tragic death of a beloved young uncle. This volume provides information on a prolific author that is accessible and helpful to readers studying Latino writers.”

Booktalks

Who knows where Cuba is? Alma Flor Ada takes us to Cuba and describes her memories as a little girl there. You will feel like you are right there feeling everything she is. As you read you will be able to see the photos of her family and friends which make it come to life even more. We all have fun times in our lives and we also have tragedies happen. Alma Flor Ada describes her Uncle’s plane crash and I thought I was right there. To see what Cuba is like and Alma’s memories of her childhood you must read Under the Royal Palms by Alma Flor Ada. — Karen Womack, graduate student

CDS AND CASSETTES DESCRIPTION

There is a special value to listening to a books read by the author. Such recordings show just where the author wishes to convey feelings and emotions, emphasis and suspense. When the text is put to music it acquires additional interest for children.

I particularly like to read aloud and to record my readings so, for me, it was particularly joyful to record these twelve stories in English and Spanish.

The stories can be found in individual cassettes in English and Spanish, one for each book of the series, or in CDs in English and Spanish versions. Each of the CDs contains the twelve stories of the series.

A Special Bonus

Because these stories have been so beloved by children, I conceived the idea of given them an extra dimension. I have rewritten the 12 stories in Spanish in verse format. And Suni Paz, with her incomparable creativity, has put them to music. So the Spanish cassettes and CD contain not only the story as published in the book told by me, but also the story retold in verse form and sang by Suni.

AUTHOR’S NOTE

The twelve books of this series are some of my best well known books among bilingual teachers and their students. They are also very dear to my heart since the inspiration for most of them comes from my own children’s childhood.

Sometimes I write the things I need to tell myself. Developing good eating habits and exercise practices have always been issues for me. So, perhaps, more than convince anyone else of their value I wrote this book to convince myself.

Besides, I have always been a great fan of Charlotte’s Web, and I was pleased to write this story to honor that extraordinary book.

“Turkey for Thanksgiving Dinner?” “No, Thanks!” and ¿Pavo para la Cena de Gracias? ¡No, gracias! have been some of my most favorite books to read aloud to children.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Three traditional fairy tales: Blancanieves [Snowwhite], Cenicienta [Cinderella] and La bella durmiente [Sleeping Beauty] have been retold in verse form by Alma Flor Ada.

These original verses provide a delightful retelling of the story.

CD DESCRIPTION

The three stories contained in the book have been told in a two part format which allows to make a pause in the listening of the story to elicit comments and predictions from the children.

Suni Paz has created outstanding dramatic music turning these retellings into real performances of the tales.

AUTHOR’S NOTE

Traditional fairy tales were an important aspect of my childhood. Later I enjoyed sharing them with my four children. Retelling well-loved stories in verse was a meaningful challenge for me, since it meant uniting two of my passions, stories and poetry.

There is always a great risk that a narrative in verse will not be true poetry. And children are much too frequently fed verses that may rhyme but are not poetry. I have always felt that this pseudo-poetry can hinder the child’s understanding of what true poetry really is, with harmful consequences. This is why these renditions were created with great care. They have been blessed by having been put to music by Suni Paz.
